Frequently Asked Questions
What is a skid plate, and why do you need one?
A skid plate is a metal shield that protect the engine compartment and wiring of your car from mechanical damage, intrusion of dust, dirt and snow. When designing our steel skid plates, we considered a few core principles: safety, reliability, convenience of use and protection.
In order to perfectly match our plates to your vehicle our team has rigorously researched individual solutions for each make and model. For each of the 5,200+ car models, we have developed skid plates that take into account the technical specifications and features of each vehicle (engine size, transmission type, etc.).
What materials are used for the skid plate?
We use 2mm high-strength, CNC machined cold-rolled steel (...) tailored specifically for your vehicle ensuring the optimal balance of protection, ease of installation and accessibility. Our products provide a cost effective OEM quality solution to reduce the risk of rock, or road debris damage while maintaining effective access and drainage ports to your vehicle's components.
While our steel panels provide the maximum protection possible from road hazards we also offer our plates in 3mm aluminium for those who prioritize the aerodynamic improvements of a full underbody skid plate at half the weight of steel.
What type of coating is used?
There are three types of anti-corrosion coatings available for our skid plates:
AluOx® – an exclusive 3 mm aluminum alloy. Provides up to 60 months of corrosion protection.
ZipoFlex® – a proprietary zinc-polymer composite. Provides up to 36 months of corrosion protection.
WhiteCover® – cold galvanization technology without additional paint coating. Provides up to 24 months of corrosion protection.
What technologies are used in the production of skid plates?
We utilize a full range of technologies to ensure safety, easy installation, increased strength, and reliability while maintaining convenient access for vehicle maintenance.
What is included in the skid plate kit, and how is it packaged?
All Kolchuga® steel skid plates are supplied with hardware kits for mounting, except the steel skid plates that are mounted with standard vehicle fasteners. All bracing elements are situated on the steel skid plate for easy mounting.
Each skid plates are packaged in bubble and plastic shipping wrap for transportation and storage. ZipoFlex® and AluOx® coated plates are packaged in a protective bumper that helps to prevent damage during shipping from our warehouse.
How to mount skid plate?
Some car models allow for mounting the Kolchuga® steel skid plate over the standard plastic skid plate. However, in most cases, it is necessary to remove the standard skid plate to mount the Kolchuga® steel skid plate.
Mounting Kolchuga® steel skid plates is ONLY supported using the included instruction locations. You should NOT need to make any additional openings in the plates for factory equipped vehicles. Mounts are all placed using bolts and nuts. No special equipment or tools are required.
How long does it take to manufacture Kolchuga® skid plates?
The most common vehicle models are available for next day shipping. If a model is not available in the warehouse, we will need about 3-4 weeks to manufacture it and deliver it to our warehouse.
