Stellantis CFO Doug Ostermann has confirmed that there is a strong demand for affordable full-size trucks in the U.S. market. With the discontinuation of the RAM 1500 Classic, a significant gap has been left in this segment. To fill it, Stellantis is planning to introduce a budget-friendly version of the RAM 1500.

While this project is in development, the new model won't hit the market immediately. The decision to end the RAM 1500 Classic production was made by former Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares. The truck, which was built on a 2008 platform, was manufactured at the Michigan assembly plant, which has since undergone restructuring. Some production capacities have been relocated to Mexico, making a direct revival of the RAM 1500 Classic challenging.

Instead of reviving the old platform, Stellantis is exploring the development of a utility-focused version based on the current RAM 1500 generation. This approach aims to bring down the starting price, which currently begins at $40,000.

Why Is RAM Introducing a More Affordable Truck?

This move comes in response to a 16% decline in RAM sales in 2024. As trucks remain Stellantis’ most profitable segment in the U.S., the company is looking to regain lost market share.

Additionally, Stellantis plans to expand its lineup with a new midsize RAM pickup, which will compete with the Ford Ranger and Chevrolet Colorado. However, the RAM 1200, designed for the Chinese market, is not planned for U.S. release.

V8 Engines Could Make a Comeback

According to unofficial sources, Stellantis is considering bringing back 5.7L and 6.4L naturally aspirated V8 engines as part of RAM's 2025 product lineup. The RAM TRX super truck, which was previously discontinued due to corporate emissions policies, may also return in an updated version.
